Grammys 2014 Winners: Daft Punk Win Album of the Year, Macklemore (Almost) Wins the Rest

daft punk, random access memories, grammys 2014, album of the year

Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories took home the biggest prize during the 56th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, January 26. The robots’ ode to the glitzy, long-gone disco era was declared the Album of the Year, beating out Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ The Heist, Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city, Taylor Swift’s Red, and Sara Bareilles’ The Blessed Unrest.

The star-studded LP was also awarded the title of Best Dance/Electronica Album and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. RAM‘s “Get Lucky,” meanwhile, snatched the trophies for Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, bringing Daft Punk’s total win count to five, more than any other artist nominated this year.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis cleaned up as well, collecting four Grammys. The Seattle duo were dubbed Best New Artist, after having swept the rap categories: They claimed Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for their unkillable “Thrift Shop,” and nabbed Best Rap Album for The Heist, somehow beating Kendrick’s good kid, m.A.A.d city, Drake’s Nothing Was the Same, Jay Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail, and SPIN’s Favorite Album of 2013, Kanye West’s Yeezus.

Lorde was another big winner. Her chart-conquering hit “Royals” was crowned Song of the Year and awarded Best Pop Solo Performance. Justin Timberlake grabbed Best R&B Song for his 20/20 Experience slow jam “Pusher Love Girl,” and Best Music Video for his David Fincher-directed, Jay Z-featuring “Suit & Tie” visual.

Some other noteworthy victories: Vampire Weekend walked off with Best Alternative Music Album for their stunning third LP, last year’s Modern Vampires of the City. “Cut Me Some Slack,” the collaboration between Nirvana’s surviving members and Sir Paul McCartney, snatched Best Rock Song; Led Zeppelin’s live Celebration Day earned Best Rock Album; Rihanna’s Unapologetic got away with Best Urban Contemporary Album; Alicia Keys won Best R&B Album for Girl on Fire; and Pharrell Williams was decreed Producer of the Year, Non-Classical.
