Chameleonic artist wrote the communal strummer specifically for the "Station to Station" train tour

Has Beck been holding out on us? The ever-changing singer-songwriter-whatever has consistently churned out releases over the past year, but they’ve generally been of the idiosyncratic variety: the Song Reader sheet-music project, followed by three low-key singles ( “I Won’t Be Long,” “Defriended,” and “Gimme”), and recent concert dates where he played absolutely no new material. But he has reportedly been working on two albums, so there’s clearly more where that came from. A new song performed live as part of the “Station to Station” tour is the most inviting and festival-ready of his recent run. “Wake Up” is a strummy, soulful anthem: “Sometimes I get so lost,” he sings more than once. As Stereogum points out, Beck unveiled the song on September 24 in Barstow, California, backed by a glorious choir. The relatively clear fan video above cuts out the opening seconds, but he introduced the song by saying, “All right, this is a song I made up for this show.” See if he plays it again when “Station to Station” descends upon Los Angeles tonight.
