The VMAs last night certainly were, um, something, and Chance the Rapper had some qualms with Miley Cyrus’ wackadoodle hosting. Specifically, the Chicago rapper criticized her not-very-funny skit with Snoop Pigg (née, Snoop Dogg) for being a bit racially insensitive. “These skits,” Chance tweeted. “The dreads.” Most troubling was Miley’s use of the word “mammy,” which, as Chance pointed out, is fraught with exploitative, archetypical racial meaning. See all his tweets below.

Also eyebrow-raising, although not pointed out by Chance, was Rebel Wilson’s “F–k tha Stripper Police” joke, in which a white Australian managed to cheaply cash in on Straight Outta Compton while completely making light of the very real issue of police brutality and #BlackLivesMatter.
