Courtney Love Will Not Be Involved in Producing HBO’s Kurt Cobain Documentary

Montage of Heck, the first-ever fully authorized documentary about legendary Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, will be directed by the Academy Award-nominated Brett Morgen and executive-produced by Cobain’s daughter. But you know who won’t be involved in the HBO film’s making? Courtney Love.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Cobain’s widow was deemed too close to the subject of the documentary to have any influence behind the scenes. Morgen reportedly told THR that while the former Hole singer had first approached him in 2007 about making what would eventually turn into Montage of Heck, and had given him unprecedented access to Cobain’s archives, the director eventually started working more closely with their daughter, Frances Bean Cobain.

“We agreed that because Courtney was a subject in the film, it would be best if she wasn’t given editorial control,” Morgen said.

Frances Bean Cobain seems to be pleased with the final product, which is set to premiere at Sundance in January before it’s more widely released sometime next year. Her at-times-estranged mother, however, “hasn’t seen the movie,” Morgen said. “I’m not sure she’s intending to.”
