Best Coast's Bethany Cosentino

Current SPIN cover girl Bethany Cosentino isn’t Stevie Nicks. But the two share both a Southern California point of view and a gift for forcefully, distinctively expressing beach-bummed heartbreak. Best Coast, Cosentino’s band with multi-instrumentalist Bobb Bruno, recently highlighted the differences and similarities between her and the unparalleled Fleetwood Mac singer with a strummy, stripped-back cover of Tusk‘s lovelorn “Storms.” Where that rendition emphasized Best Coast’s lo-fi roots while finding commonality in a clear-eyed depiction of melancholy, the band’s latest Fleetwood Mac-Nicks cover leans toward ’60s Brill Building pop and ’90s indie-pop. Best Coast’s lilting, piano-oriented take on “Rhiannon,” a classic from Fleetwood Mac’s 1975 self-titled album, is set to appear on the upcoming Mac tribute compilation Just Tell Me That You Want Me, due out on August 14 via Hear Music/Concord. Here, see Cosentino and Bruno perform their disarmingly frank take live in a Sirius XM studio (the performance aired on SiriusXMU). Bruno is wearing a Scorpions T-shirt. Piano-pop you like a hurricane:
