G-Dragon Spreads Anarchy in K-Pop With Punk-Charged ‘Crooked’ Video

G-Dragon, "Crooked," video, punk, K-pop, 'Coup d'Etat,' Missy Elliott, Sky Ferreira, Diplo

As the Ramones might’ve put it, G-Dragon is a punk rocker now. The South Korean pop singer and BigBang group leader released the first chunk of his sophomore album Coup d’Etat on September 2; at least on U.S. iTunes, that included the audacious Missy Elliott collaboration “Niliria,” the romantically brooding Sky Ferreira collaboration “Black,” and the sinister, trap-minded title track, which features Diplo and “Harlem Shake” maker Baauer. The last of those has already spawned the eye-popping “Coup d’Etat” video.

The first video from our second online helping (out September 5) of Coup d’Etat is no less visually dazzling, only this time the rapid-paced clip toys with first-generation punk iconography. That means we see the K-pop singer in T-shirts styled after classic Sex Pistols and Black Flag imagery; a member of his posse reps AC/DC. The song, “Crooked,” doesn’t throw back that far — it’s synthed-up, deliriously catchy pop-punk — something like if Nine Inch Nails’ “Everything” were remixed by sadly defunct Swedish indie-pop hooligans the Tough Alliance. Maybe real punks don’t wear black, but the sound here is neon-bright.

Coup d’Etat will be out in its entirety on September 13.
