Sky Ferreira Breaks From Vampire Weekend Tour Citing Throat Trouble

Sky Ferreira, Vampire Weekend, tour, cancels

Sky Ferreira’s upcoming debut album holds plenty of promise, but for the moment she’s not able to sing it. The “Everything Is Embarrassing” prefab-pop survivor is on doctors’ orders not to sing for a little while due to an illness affecting her vocal cords, according to a Facebook post. “Sadly, the timing will force me to miss this week’s shows with Vampire Weekend,” Ferreira wrote. She apologized to the band and her fans.

The timing could hardly be more unfortunate. Night Time, My Time marks Ferreira’s first proper full-length after years of scattered singles and EPs, and is due October 29 via Capitol. Latest single “You’re Not the One,” an ’80s-glossed love-triangle anthem, finds her continuing to develop after the scattered but significant potential of last year’s hazy Ghost EP. And Ferreira’s upcoming tour dates with first Vampire Weekend, then Smith Westerns should give her a chance to showcase the new material for audiences that would likely be receptive.

Ferreira didn’t say exactly how many shows she will miss. Her five remaining Vampire Weekend dates were to run from tonight (October 2) in Walter White’s Albuquerque, New Mexico, to October 10 in Grand Prairie, Texas, with a stop in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as well as Nashville and Kansas City, Missouri. She didn’t mention her Smith Western dates, which run November 11 to November 23, so fingers crossed. Ferreira’s schedule also includes an October 21 set alongside Cat Power as part of an Elliott Smith tribute concert in Brooklyn.

There’s also an unfortunate elephant in the room. Ferreira and her boyfriend, DIIV’s Zachary Cole Smith, were arrested last month in upstate New York on drug and other charges. She recently spoke out about the arrests for the first time, stressing that the police were targeting the couple, that she’s not a heroin addict, and that friends and associates should try to help or heal rather than mock. No mockery here.

Ferreira’s full post is below.

Due an illness affecting my vocal chords, my doctor has prescribed several days of total vocal rest. Sadly, the timing will force me to miss this week’s shows with Vampire Weekend. I’m sorry for the inconvenience this has caused for the band and fans. I’m doing my best to re-join the tour as soon I’m 100%.
