Watch Josh Homme Debut ‘Villains of Circumstance’ at Solo Acoustic Show
Seven-minute song played for the first time at London's Meltdown Festival
The diverse 2014 bill for London’s Meltdown Festival was curated by UNKLE’s Jimmy Lavelle, and Monday night marked one of the more special performances of the whole 10-day affair. Former UNKLE collaborator Josh Homme stopped by London’s Royal Festival Hall for a rare solo acoustic set. According to Antiquiet, that show was heavy on Queens of the Stone Age hits, but Homme also debuted a new track, apparently titled “Villains of Circumstance.”
The origins of this seven-minute song are unclear at this point, though it could certainly land on either the follow-up to …Like Clockwork or (less likely) an Eagles of Death Metal LP, both of which Homme hinted at earlier this year.
The California songwriter is hard to make out in the fan-recorded clip below, but the audio is relatively clear. Though decidedly more morose and tempestuous than much of his recorded catalog, the serpentine chord changes and his familiar throaty vocals place this well within the realm of Homme’s work with Queens of the Stone Age.
