Washed Out’s ‘All I Know’ Gets Touching Coming-of-Age Video

washed out, all i know, video, urban outfitters

Washed Out set sight on the open road in a new music video highlighting Paracosm feel-good track “All I Know.” Produced by Urban Outfitters and directed by Daniel Kragh-Jacobsen, the eight-minute epic follows two best friends as they travel across America, drinking beers, charming girls, cannon-balling into motel pools, and streaking in public, all while chilling out to a sun-dappled soundtrack arranged by synth-prince Ernest Greene.

The mini-movie opens with one of the lead characters talking to his buddy about a recent break-up. Turns out his ex-girlfriend has since taken up with an older man. “Apparently he’s, like, 35,” the second dude (unhelpfully) says. “She’s living with him.” The boys decide to try and outrun the heartbreak, but slowly it becomes clear that our teary-eyed hero has an ulterior motive.

Kragh-Jacobsen spoke with Urban Outfitters about the clip, revealing that the story is based on his own life. “For me it’s always trying to find something personal to talk about in these music videos,” he said. “If [I] can connect to part of a lyric or part of the rhythm that sparks sort of a memory in me I normally go from there, and I usually try to tell the artists why this is important for me and why this story comes to mind. It’s been many years since I’ve experienced this, but the video is based off an experience when I was like 19 or 20. The good thing about doing something personal, even if you don’t have a lot of time, you have a vision.”
