Billy Corgan has released the second song from the Smashing Pumpkins’ new 44-track project, Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, and like its predecessor, “Widow Wake My Mind” is a very pleasant surprise. Read: It’s doesn’t suck… at all.

Hear the track below.

Ol’ Billy has ditched the dark, punishing sound of the Pumpkins’ 2007 “reunion” album, Zeitgeist, opting for a more straight-forward rock sound reminiscent of his short-lived side-project Zwan.

“Widow Wake My Mind” opens with a funky, jangly electric guitar riff and soon drops into a dreamy sequence of floating bass and keys. “I’m looking for a love that shines / To be mine / Yes, all mine / A love that’s mine,” he sings in that nasal snarl over a climbing melody.

It’s a well-crafted pop-rock song with spare piano interludes, never-overbearing drums (Jimmy Chamberlin’s 19-year-old replacement is working out nicely), and a big, song-capping vocal with polished guitar solos.

So far, Mr. Corgan has a record of 2-0. Let’s hope he keeps the winning streak up — 42 more songs to go!
