King Khan & the Shrines have several strong suits, but punctuality is not one. The psych-soul clan waited five years to follow 2008's The Supreme Genius of King Khan & the Shrines with Idle No More, a long-awaited comeback that arrived in September 2013. (To be fair, though, King Khan suffered a self-described "huge meltdown" during the interim, due to some personal struggles.) And now, nearly 10 months after they revealed Idle No More single "Born to Die," King Khan & the Shrines have finally shared a music video for the track. Fittingly, the visual tells a temporally-challenged story of an execution.Directed by Berlin's Hylas Film, the "Born to Die" clip opens in prehistoric times, then jumps to an era when royalty wore long, flowing wigs — and apparently had hot candle-wax dripped onto their chests. Meanwhile, the kinky king in question has also ordered the death of a criminal who appears to be from the 20th century (judging from the use of the electric chair). If the video sounds erratic but fascinating, that's because it is.Speaking to Noisey about the piece, King Khan, a.k.a. Arish Ahmad Khan, said, "Ultimately, I wanted to pay tribute to Alejandro Jodorowsky, who is one of my spiritual gurus and one of the greatest filmmakers of all-time." (Again, unsual timing, considering that rappers Asaad and Ab-Soul recently nodded to the Chilean director with the collaborative track "Alejandro Jodorowsky Flow.")Watch the video for "Born to Die" above, and stream all of Idle No More right here at SPIN.
