An upcoming compilation of early, mostly cover material has been announced for singer/songwriter Jeff Buckley, whose legacy continues to linger over popular music nearly two decades after his death at age 30. NPR has shared the first advance track from the collection: A take on Sly and the Family Stone’s classic flower-power-era plea for universal tolerance, “Everyday People.” The rendition is done just with Buckley’s singular voice and guitar accompaniment, and like most things the late icon recorded in his short life, it’s legitimately spine-tingling.
