See Pearl Jam, My Morning Jacket Pay Musical Tribute to Lou Reed

Pearl Jam, My Morning Jacket, Lou Reed, Velvet Underground, covers, live, video

Lou Reed’s death on October 27 at age 71 has already generated some fine, fine music. The former Velvet Underground frontman’s passing, reportedly due to liver disease, quickly drew written tributes from fellow VU member John Cale as well as a host of musicians from David Bowie to Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon and Lee Ranaldo. But some bands playing live last night seized the moment to cover some of Reed’s songs.

As JamBase points out, Pearl Jam blazed through a cover of “I’m Waiting for the Man,” from 1967’s The Velvet Underground & Nico, as part of an encore in Baltimore; watch that above. My Morning Jacket, performing at Neil Young’s 2013 Bridge School Benefit Concert in California, brought out Young, Elvis Costello, and Jenny Lewis to cover “Oh! Sweet Nuthin’,” from 1970’s Loaded; watch that below.

Reed’s influence extended beyond the punk, alternative rock, and indie rock milieu where it’s most often noted. Phish, performing in Hartford, Connecticut, opened their show with an 11-minute cover of Loaded‘s “Rock & Roll,” which you can hear below, also via JamBase.
