Drake Nods to ‘Scarface’ in Violent ‘Hold On, We’re Going Home’ Video

Drake knows better than just about anyone the crucial balance between hard and soft, in pop as in rap. Toronto’s very own told Ryan Seacrest he envisioned “Hold On, We’re Going Home” as a song that people might want to walk down the aisle to in five or 10 years. But go too schmaltzy and a smoothly romantic song like that Majid Jordan-assisted single could spoil long before then.

The video, out in time for Nothing Was the Same‘s release day, wisely veers back toward tough-guy rap iconography, with ’80s Miami opulence and ample gunfire. The director, Bill Pope, has some experience with these things, having worked on, among many other things, the Matrix movies. A$AP Rocky gives an opening speech, and actor Steven Baauer of Scarface fame plays the bad guy. Hold on, there’s someone to rescue before we go home — let alone get married.
