Drake often blurs the line that separates rap and R&B, but his new single “Hold on We’re Going Home” is something else entirely: a plunge into foggy synth-pop. The track was premiered on Toronto radio this morning (via Hip Hop N More), and it finds Drizzy in full croon, pushing past the boundary established by previous hits “Find Your Love” or “Marvin’s Room” (or even Alicia Keys’ “Un-Thinkable,” which Drake wrote and provided uncredited vocals for). Featuring the previously unknown duo Majid Jordan, the song cuts sharply against the aggressive myth-making of “Started From the Bottom,” leaving recent tracks “The Motion” and “All Me” to bridge the gap.
2013 has been dominated by backward-looking pop (see: “Blurred Lines” and “Get Lucky”) and if “Hold on We’re Going Home” hits the pop charts it will fall right in line, even if it pushes the retro-timeline into the 1980s. His third album Nothing Was the Same is out September 17 via Young Money/Cash Money.
