Die Antwoord, ‘$O$’ (Cherrrytree/Interscope)

“I know it sounds strange,” chirps mullet-rockin’ Yo-Landi Vi$$er in “Rich Bitch,” “but I used to count change.” In fact, that’s one of the more credible claims on this South African rave-rap crew’s delightfully low-rent debut; when Vi$$er’s elaborately tattooed partner Ninja tells you he’ll “decapitate a hater with amazing ease,” you’ll have to take the media-savvy art-scene vet at his word. Interscope appears to be positioning Die Antwoord as international heirs to Eminem’s enraged white-trash-party tradition, but $O$ more often brings to mind another of the label’s quirky imports–remember t.A.T.u.?
