The Smashing Pumpkins just released “Spangled,” the sixth song from their 44-track Teargarden by Kaleidoscope project, as a free download to benefit Sweet Relief, a fund to help musicians in need. Get the track for free right here (donations are suggested; don’t be a Scrooge!).
“Spangled,” which will hit the Pumpkins’ website on September 15, is a Beatles-esque psychedelic jam written around a harpsichord melody. It builds with drums and a gliding electric guitar riff, but, unlike other Teargarden tracks “Freak” and “Song for a Son,” never takes off into alt-rock guitar heroics. It’s a more tender moment for Corgan: “How I love you isn’t fair / God must want me next to you….Tangled in your body / Spangled by the nighttime stars.”
“It’s just a pretty song,” says Corgan. Indeed.
