Scarlett’s New Singing Career

Husky-voiced Scarlett Johansson will cover seminal singer/songwriter Tom Waits for her first album, which reportedly will be called Scarlett Sings Tom Waits. The 21-year-old sultry starlet will be recording her debut through the winter and is eyeing a spring 2007 release for it via Rhino Records’ Atco label, Fox News reveals. This street date for the album will be coordinated with the actress’ busy film schedule, as Johansson’s forthcoming films include The Nanny Diaries, The Other Boleyn Girl, Mary Queen of Scots, among others.

Though she sang on Saturday Night Live, karaoked in Lost In Translation, and performed a smoothly smoky version of Gershwin’s “Summertime,” most online critics are skeptical of Johansson’s new project.

Here’s what the people are saying:

“Although acclaimed, and loved, Waits doesn’t exactly write the catchiest pop tunes, and he’s definitely no Beyonce. Don’t get me wrong, that’s not a bad thing. The world could do with less Beyonce imitators. The point here, though, is that Scarlett shouldn’t get her hopes up for a multi-platinum selling album. Of course, if the liner notes contain a few choice photos, well, you never know…” — egostatic.com

“I don’t really care what Scarlett’s next adventure may hold, but I’m going to support her no matter what. This may be hard to believe, but I’ll do almost anything a hot girl tells me to do.” — dirtycarl.com

“This story sounds a little off, and we really hope the talented actress isn’t about to try to become a pop star. Obviously the comparison to Tom Waits means she is not going down the Paris or Lindsay route, but still, we’re not a fan of actors going into singing. Look what it did to poor Jared Leto.” — popsugar.com

“NOOO! Tom Waits is sacred. SHE CAN’T! Somebody stop this NOW! Tom can’t possibly have approved this?” — patty cake, dlisted.blogspot.com
