Members from some of punk's most influential bands, including Circle Jerks, Black Flag, and Redd Kross, have teamed up for a new project called OFF!, and while legendary singer Keith Morris fronts the outfit, the star of their new video is a different kind of artist: painter Raymond Pettibon, the man behind iconic images from Black Flag, Sonic Youth, and many more. Watch the video below, exclusively at SPIN.com!
In the clip for "Black Thoughts," a brain-bashing one-minute punk blast from their Oct. 12 release 1st EP (via Vice Records), Pettibon is shown painting a large black image of a guitar and a severed leg, which doubles at the album's cover art (the release arrives with a poster of the artwork).
Keith Morris, the leader of the quartet which also includes Red Kross' Steven Shane McDonald, Burning Brides' Dimitri Coats, and Rocket from the Crypt/Hot Snake drummer Mario Rubalcaba, emailed SPIN.com about the making of the video.
"[Raymond has] spent time in the ranks of Black Flag and the Circle Jerks, so when I went and hung out with him... we re-established a friendship that started in the '70s," says Morris. "We always appreciated each other's work, so it all fell into place. Raymond's creating all of the artwork for OFF!, which takes him back to the South Bay circa 1976 and we've brought him in as our fifth member."
