At Sunday's 83rd annual Academy Awards in Los Angeles, Trent Reznor picked up the Oscar in the category of Best Original Score for his soundtrack to The Social Network; it was the Nine Inch Nails frontman's first score (which he co-wrote with frequent collaborator Atticus Ross) and first nomination. Network didn't fare so well in the biggest categories, though: It lost to The King's Speech for Best Picture, and David Fincher lost Best Director to Speech's Tom Hooper.

"I am truly stunned by this," Reznor told reporters after the ceremony. "David [Fincher] bugged us to do it. I'm very glad we did. It's been the best experience I've ever had from start to finish."

Reznor and Ross faced stiff competition for the Best Original Score category: the duo beat out vets like A.R. Rahman (who won in 2008 for his Slumdog Millionaire score) and Oscar-winner Hans Zimmer, who wrote the music for Inception.

Even with Reznor's win, there were plenty of other musical highlights during last night's telecast. Florence and the Machine's Florence Welch -- who replaced singer Dido last minute -- delivered a stunning performance of Rahman's 127 Hours song "If I Rise," while Gwyneth Paltrow proved her next role may be as a Nashville star thanks to her performance of "Coming Home," from Country Strong.

Reznor, meanwhile, looks to have a big future penning music for the Silver Screen. As SPIN previously reported, he's set to score Fincher's movie The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, slated to hit theaters this Christmas.?

But Reznor will release new music ahead of his Tattoo score. He revealed this weekend that he's finished recording a new album with his band How to Destroy Angels, which is tentatively slated for release this Fall.
