After writing the score for David Fincher’s movie The Social Network, Trent Reznor is now looking to do more soundtrack projects. The Nine Inch Nails frontman has revealed he’ll score the American film adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s bestselling book The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, which is also being directed by Fincher and slated to hit theaters this Christmas.

In an interview with The New York TimesTimesTalks series, Reznor said he’s been collaborating for the last month with longtime songwriting partner Atticus Ross on the music, and they’ve already got a bunch of material in the can. Expect it to be sonically different than Reznor’s electronic material for Network.

“We started recording things in a different way, that was all based on performance, nothing programmed,” Reznor says of the orchestral-oriented score. “And that would be my limited skills at stringed instruments. We process it in a way that gives it a really interesting, organic, layered feel. It felt like something we’ve never done before.”

So far, Reznor has delivered two hours of music to Fincher, which the director is using in early mockup scenes.

Reznor isn’t just focusing on a new soundtrack – he’s also recording new tunes with Ross and his wife Mariqueen Maandig for their band How to Destroy Angels. Unlike the orchestral-oriented music for Tattoo, their debut full-length will be more electronic-based and far more polished than their debut EP, which they recorded on the fly.

“We’ve gone in a completely different direction that’s much more rhythm and beat-oriented, opposite direction of Social Network and Dragon Tattoo,” Reznor says. “[Our debut EP] was the results of a couple months of us…turning the computer on and seeing what comes out. I’m proud of it but it feels like that was the first thing we’ve done. The new thing is not that – it feels more like a substantive piece of work.”
