There’s a reason why SPIN chose Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent, as the cover subject for our September Style Issue: Her electrifying on-camera presence and matinee idol/Audrey Hepburn aesthetic came through boldly in the photos by Tom Allen. But then Clark turned to what she does best – performing her mesmerizing, mercurial music, which is best exemplified on her latest, Strange Mercy (out September 13). Watch exclusive acoustic versions of two songs, plus an interview, below.
First she played “Surgeon,” from Strange Mercy. With the woozy synthesizers and spastic rhythms of the album version whittled away, Clark’s spare guitar arrangement and unadorned coo take the spotlight.
Next came Tom Waits’ “Tango Till They’re Sore,” the inconic songwriter’s rambling Big Easy tale.
