Ariana Grande Cribs 'Star Wars' Credits for 'Break Free' Lyric Video

'Barbarella'-inspired single ups the sci-fi ante

Colin Joyce

Former Nickelodeon star Ariana Grande made strong first forays into the broader music world last year with a crisp bubblegum R&B collection called Yours Truly. Last week, she shared "Break Free," a Barbarella-inspired collaboration with EDM producer Zedd and she's returned today with a lyric video that makes overt references to another famed sci-fi staple. After opening with a title card that cribs the iconic line "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away," the clip borrows Star Wars' famous twinking sky and scrolling block lettering as a means of transmitting the lyrics for her boisterous new single. It's an idea so simple that anyone could have thought of it, but not everyone has Universal Music Group's stable of lawyers at their back to fend off George Lucas.
