Portishead’s Beth Gibbons Covers Black Sabbath on ‘Black Sabbeth’
She's accompanied by stoner-metal trio Gonga in the new video
Sometimes it’s best to just let a work of art speak for itself. Above, you’ll find a video for a song called “Black Sabbeth.” It’s Portishead’s Beth Gibbons singing Black Sabbath’s “Black Sabbath” (from the album, Black Sabbath) while English stoner-metal trio Gonga back her up. The visuals are clearly cribbed from some campy horror-movie classic — if you know which one, tell us so — and they fit oh-so-perfectly with that haunting voice and that dirging guitar, both of which seem to be uttering “Satan” with every little sound. Stereogum shared the thing, but do be sure to revisit SPIN’s review of Portishead’s 2009 return set, Third. Gibbons is working on a new solo album for Domino.
