Cold Cave Rebound From Ex-Member’s Death With ‘Oceans With No End’ EP
New anthem comes just days after news of Justin Benoit's passing
Wes Eisold’s Cold Cave project may have a newly minted lineup, but the darkwave mastermind single-handedly performed all the instrumentation on “Oceans With No End,” the synth-swabbed title track off Cold Cave’s upcoming two-track EP of the same name. Stuffed with galloping industrial clatter and buzzing melody, this four-and-a-half-minute electro anthem finds Eisold in a wounded but hopeful mood, declaring through distorted vocals, “I love my life.”
This thrilling, life-affirming new track has a bittersweet tinge, though, coming just days after Eisold confirmed the death of former Cold Cave member Justin Benoit. On February 21, Eisold wrote on Facebook, “Friends, It saddens me to have to tell you of the tragic passing of Justin ‘Chachi’ Benoit. As many of you know we lived together in my Philadelphia house, and he continued to live there until his passing. He was my friend and band member. He was a genius with impeccable taste. He loved his family, his friends, The Fall and when he would see broken umbrellas on the street. We love him and miss him dearly. Rest In Peace. Please let’s be respectful of everyone’s privacy to grieve.” The cause of Benoit’s death has not yet been revealed.
As for Cold Cave’s future, the Oceans With No End EP does not yet have an official release date, but according to label Deathwish Inc., the follow-up to last year’s A Little Death to Laugh EP will be out “soon.” In addition to “Oceans With No End,” the new short-player features the less-optimistic-sounding “People Are Poison,” a song described in an official statement as having “an angry swagger” that provides a “direct juxtaposition to the title track’s driving urgency.”
