Bratz Sues Lady Gaga for Depriving the World of Monster Dolls

Lady Gaga is no longer overseas offending the sensibilities of international audiences, but she isn’t staying out of trouble. The makers of Bratz dolls have filed a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against the singer, claiming she delayed the release of her own line of little monsters.

According to Bloomberg, Toy manufacturer MGA Entertainment is seeking damages totaling $10 million from the singer, her management company, and her label, Universal Music Group (more specifically the merchandising company it owns, Bravado), for breach of contract after the companies involved put a hold on MGA’s production of a Lady Gaga Bratz (Brat?). The Gaga doll was supposed to hit shelves last Christmas season, but at the last minute, and after MGA allegedly laid down a $1 million advance for the operation, Gaga and her camp decided to hold off on bringing the dolls to market until next year’s highly anticipated new album drops, while turning their attentions instead to the creepy ad campaign for her new fragrance (in addition to recently launching her social network).

MGA says it hoped to earn about $28 million in worldwide revenue for this fall’s retail season, claiming it “invested millions in the preproduction of the Lady Gaga dolls and put its reputation and goodwill on the line in order to secure distributors and retail shelf space.”

“This is a dispute between Universal Music Group’s merchandising company and MGA,” Amanda Silverman, one of Gaga’s reps, told Bloomberg. “There was no legitimate reason for dragging Lady Gaga into that dispute. Lady Gaga will vigorously defend MGA’s ill-conceived lawsuit and is confident that she will prevail.” A spokesman for UMG also called the claims “meritless” and said the companies would “vigorously defend” themselves in court.
