The music that Devon Welsh and Matthew Otto make as Majical Cloudz tends to err on the gloomy side, but a video for their new single “Downtown” finds them highlighting a playful streak embedded at the heart of their work. Somewhere beneath the existential probing and gloomy synth lines is a kernel of hope, a suggestion that everything will be OK, something that welsh seems to emphasize with his delicate prancing through open fields and down railroad tracks in the new clip. He’s said before that “the cheesiest songs end with a smile,” but his best work will make you want to smile anyway. Watch here.
