A Four-Part Documentary About Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine Is Coming to HBO Next Year

Dr. Dre and Interscope co-founder Jimmy Iovine have had a long and fruitful business partnership. In the ’90s, Interscope provided funding and distribution to Death Row Records, the seminal west coast rap label that Dre founded with Suge Knight, and a few years later, Iovine helped get Dre’s Aftermath Entertainment off the ground. More recently, the two were partners in the incredibly lucrative Beats Electronics brand, now a subsidiary of Apple.

Next year, a four-part documentary about their partnership called The Defiant Ones is coming to HBO, Complex reports. It will be directed by Menace II Society filmmaker Allen Hughes, who spent three years filming Dre and Iovine for the film. Iovine has been active in the music industry since his days as a studio engineer and producer in the 1970s, and The Defiant Ones will also feature appearances by musicians in his deep rolodex of associates, including Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Nicks, and Tom Petty.

“This epic look at America shows how you can consistently defy conventional wisdom and even logic, and still win big,” an HBO spokesperson said in a press release.
