As we learned a few days ago, a Jay Z endorsement is Hillary Clinton’s latest attempt at securing her already comfortable lead among African-American voters. Their get-out-the-vote concert went down in Cleveland, Ohio last night, with Clinton, Jay Z, Beyoncé, Chance the Rapper, J. Cole, and Big Sean in attendance.
Jay and Beyoncé introduced Clinton and welcomed her with hugs. Clinton quoted some of Jay Z’s lyrics from his remix of Jeezy’s “My President Is Black”: “Rosa Parks sat so Martin Luther could walk / Martin Luther walked so Barack Obama could run / Barack Obama ran so all the children could fly.” Later, during Beyoncé’s performance, a video screen flashed Clinton’s 1992 “baked cookies” quote, reframing what was once considered a notorious gaffe as a statement of empowerment.
Hip-hop’s First Couple have quietly supported Clinton for months, but last night’s event was their most visible endorsement to date. Watch Jay Z and Beyoncé’s Clinton introduction plus raw footage of the entire concert below.
