Hear Garbage Dissect ‘Felt’ on the Song Exploder Podcast

Garbage Felt Song Exploder Interview History Shirley Manson

Shirley Manson is still one of our favorite interview subjects, and in a brand new installment of the Song Exploder podcast, you can hear her explain the history and making of Garbage’s 2012 single, “Felt.” Butch Vig joins in as well, and gets into the nitty gritty of not just the song, but the band’s powerful comeback album, Not Your Kind of People. The audio — streaming and downloadable below — is the 10th episode in a series created and hosted by Hrishikesh Hirway, a.k.a. the One A.M. Radio.

Each clip is an in-depth exploration of what makes a song the song that it is, featuring insight from the artist responsible for the thing. Previous participants include Poliça, Baths, Daedelus, YACHT, and the Postal Service. In this latest 20-minute chapter, Manson shares her influences (the Cocteau Twins, Siouxie Sioux) while Vig discusses studio-craft and reveals that Garbage — fittingly — often wind up using their throwaway placeholder tracks in the final product.
