During this weekend’s Virgin Mobile FreeFest in Maryland, bands stopped by the American Express® ZYNC ZONE, to chat with SPIN about their summer festival experiences and much more, among them DC natives Thievery Corporation — watch our video interview, plus performance footage below!
The duo of Rob Garza and Eric Hilton carried out a DIY dream in nearby Washington, DC, starting their own record label out of Hilton’s famous Eighteenth Street Lounge nightclub some 15 years ago, and were excited to have an event like FreeFest in their backyard.
“You’ve got two very creative cities,” said Hilton of DC and Baltimore. “Just to have something this close to DC is great. We don’t have festivals in DC, so this is the next best thing.”
Garza also talked about how the international nature of the Nation’s Capitol was essential to their global sound. “It was very easy to find artists from any corner of the world,” he said. “If you’re in [DC neighborhood] Adams Morgan, you can go to different bars and cafes and they’ll be singers. For such a small city, it’s very concentrated with people from all over the globe.”
