Sailor Jerry, Greenhornes Rock Mercury Lounge
Friday night (Sept. 3), Sailor Jerry Rum brought the party to NYC’s Mercury Lounge with a hip-shaking, free performance from recently reunited Cincinnati garage rockers, the Greenhornes.
While band members Jack Lawrence (bass) and Patrick Keeler (drums) have been splitting time in recent years between various Jack White-led side projects (the Raconteurs and the Dead Weather), Friday’s performance played out like the band hadn’t taken any respite at all.
From the opening notes of set-starter “Can’t Stand It,” the band had the packed room shimmying and clapping to their bluesy blasts.
The band engaged in little to no banter as they raced through their set, only acknowledging the rapturous crowd with a “thank you” after each song, and the crowd egged on the band all night with scores of cheers, yelps, and fist pumps.
The evening came to a close as the crowd clamored for one last song when the band exited. The hardworking Greenhornes didn’t even make it off stage before hopping right back on for a three-song encore to cap off a sweaty and fun night — and the band’s first New York City show in years.
