WATCH: Bruce Springsteen Debuts New Song Live!

Bon Jovi diehards, Eli Manning fans, and Sopranos family members (read: Silvio Dante) will mourn the loss of New Jersey’s Giants Stadium when it’s demolished after this football season. But no one will miss it as much as Bruce Springsteen. Wednesday night, the Boss opened a five-gig farewell to the venue with “Wrecking Ball,” a brand new song written especially for the occasion. Watch video of the performance below!

“It’s nice to be in my backyard,” Springsteen quipped, strumming his electric guitar and soon busting into the new song. “My home is here at the Meadowlands / Where mosquitoes grow as big as airplanes,” he sang, spurring cheers from the tens of thousands of fans. “Here where the blood is spilled, the arena is filled / And Giants play the game.”

The song was an ode to the Garden State’s resilience in the face of change: “All our youth and beauty have been given to dust,” the Boss continued. “All our little victories and glories have turned into parking lots. Bring on your wrecking ball / C’mon, take your best shot.”

In all, Springsteen performed a three-hour, 29-song set. He ripped through the classics (“Rosalita (Come Out Tonight),” “Badlands,” “Thunder Road”), and performed his complete 1975 classic Born to Run in order. According to the New Jersey Star-Ledger, Springsteen jumped into the crowd and downed a fan’s beer, and brought a boy from the audience onto the stage to sing “Waitin’ On a Sunny Day.” The Boss, who recently turned 60, even recalled “the weirdest dream I ever had,” explaining that there were a lot of relatives at his house surrounding a cake. “This is the part you won’t believe,” he said. “There were 60 fucking candles on it!”

Springsteen’s farewell run at Giants Stadium continues Friday night with a full performance of 1978’s Darkness on the Edge of Town.
