Pearl Jam will release their new album, tentatively titled Backspacer, early this fall. Hey, it only took three years and cost bassist Jeff Ament $3,000 in cash, his passport, and a few head lacerations — it must be awesome!
Backspacer will be released through retail chain Target. Unlike Prince’s exclusive deal with the retailer earlier this year, Pearl Jam will also sell the album through a variety of other distribution partners, including independent record stores.
“We’ll have a lot of partners,” PJ’s manager Kelly Curtis told Billboard.com.”Target ended up allowing us to have other partners. We’ll be able to take care of all levels of the Pearl Jam fan… Target was cool enough to realize that little independent record stores are not their competition.” Curtis also stated that Backspacer would be for sale via Ten Club, Pearl Jam’s fan site.
Target’s involvement with Pearl Jam has been rumored since last week, when music website Antiquiet reported that the band was filming a Target commercial at Seattle’s Showbox Theatre with director Cameron Crowe, with whom the band is also working with on a feature-length documentary. Antiquiet is hosting a bootleg recording of new track “The Fixer,” which was recorded during the Seattle set. An official first single from Backspacer, though still unannounced, is set for release in July.
Meanwhile, Pearl Jam is scheduled to premiere new songs from Backspacer on TV tonight to celebrate Conan O’Brien’s debut as the host of the Tonight Show. Tune into to NBC at 11:35 P.M. to watch. Ed Ved and crew are also slated to headline Austin City Limits and Outside Lands festivals this summer.
