The Killers are serious about their bid to become America’s next rock gods. And Monday night the Las Vegas band made some serious headway with an awe-inspiring performance on The Late Show with David Letterman, backed by a 20-piece orchestra — including a freakin’ harp. This comes just weeks after the quartet’s dazzling hometown tour-opener and headlining performance at Coachella.
Frontman Brandon Flowers — in his feathered get-up — led the band in “A Dustland Fairytale.” The epic song with Bruce Springsteen-like lyrics about love in America’s Heartland, ascending piano melodies, and drastic rhythmic shifts reached new levels of drama because of the orchestra’s support.
