Listen to Tracey Thorn's Silky xx Cover

Not too long ago, British inside-out rock specialists the xx asked a host of their favorite artists to cover songs from their own Mercury Prize-winning debut, including Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn of Everything But the Girl fame. But due to some "logistical" issues, Watt and Thorn's contribution never materialized. Such a bummer. Today, however, Merge has shared a silken cover of "Night Time" that Thorn was able to rearrange and record alone anyway. It is both below and set to be released November 1 as the opening tune on a new EP from Thorn by the very same name. That is the opposite of a bummer. Have a listen and let us know what you think.

First Spin: Hear Richard Swift's 'MG 333' and See Exclusive Shots of the Shins' Studio

This week, Secretly Canadian released Richard Swift's Walt Wolfman EP, the first bit of music we've heard from the monstrously prolific singer/songwriter since a severe finger fracture threatened to halt his guitar playing a year ago. Fortunately, he wasn't sidelined long, and in addition to recording songs of his own, Swift — who's also a much-sought-after session player and producer — has also become a member of the Shins. Have a listen to "MG 333," a delicious, spectral R&B cut from the Wolfman EP and check out a few Instagram shots he captured while at work on the the Shins' forthcoming followup to 2007's Wincing The Night Away. First Spin: Hear Surfer Blood's 'Tarot Classics' EP

Next Tuesday, Kanine Recordswill release Tarot Classics, the new EP from South Florida indie-rockers/CMJ survivalists Surfer Blood. While the disc ditches a lot of the volume-juicing tactics of its predecessor, 2009's Astro Coast, it's a tuneful step toward what SPIN writer Nick Murray refers to as "college rock bliss". Listen to the EP in its entirety as well as two bonus remixes by Speculator and Summer of Love, both of which will be included on the release across all formats. Surfer Blood, "Drinking Problem (Speculator Remix)" Voyager Reprise (Another Summer of Love Remix)"

First Spin: Raleigh Moncrief's 'Cast Out For Days'

You've likely heard Raleigh Moncrief's work without knowing it. The California native has played guitar in Marnie Stern's touring outfit, collaborated with Zach Hill and Youth Lagoon's Trevor Powers, and co-engineered Dirty Projectors' 2009 art-pop splash Bitte Orca. This year has seen the release of Moncrief's own Watered Lawn, a rambunctious full-length effort that features the cortex-searing soul of "Castout for Days". Check it out here and grab Watered Lawn when it arrives next week via Anticon. Raleigh Moncrief, "Cast Out For Days"

First Spin: Niki and the Dove's 'The Drummer' (Blood Diamonds Remix)

Today, Sub Pop is releasing The Drummer, a new digital-only EP from forward-leaning Swedish pop duo Niki and the Dove. SPIN's got a gnarled, free-floating remix of the EP's title cut from nascent Vancouver producer Mike Tucker, otherwise known as Blood Diamonds. It's bomb shelter R&B with a deep, almost scary affinity for the vocal melodies it guts and then tosses.

First Spin: Russian Circles' 'Empros' LP

Next week, Chicago post-metal outfit Russian Circles will uncage their latest full-length, Empros. As SPIN's own Christopher R. Weingarten so wryly summarized in his review of the record, it's an offering that updates the band's previous "feel-good churn" by "adopting the blown-out blear of black-metal, plus some adrenalized bass-drum stutter-rawk for good measure."Look for it on shelves (courtesy of Sargent House) next Tuesday and check out a full-stream here.

Premiere: Watch Rittz's Dark 'Wishin' ' Video

Rittz is never one to shy away from bleak imagery, and in this 3 Little Digs-directed clip the mop-topped, Yelawolf-approved Atlanta MC goes to what you might call a dark place. It's a literal interpretation of his headspace, complimented nicely by the xx sample producer Count Justice grafted onto the beat.

Video Premiere: Future Islands' 'Give Us the Wind'

Future Islands have always boasted an innate flair for the dramatic. In this softly-lit, Mike Anderson-directed clip for "Give Us The Wind," a highlight from the Baltimore synth romantics' fantastic new full-length, full-throated frontman Samuel T. Herring lends an otherwise macabre affair some real punch: a boatload of gesticulations and pained faces fit for The Globe. First Spin: Class Actress' 'Rapprocher' LP

"Chillwave never had much of a female presence, but Brooklyn's Class Actress aim to change that." That's SPIN writer Dan Weiss on Rapprocher, the glittering, skittering, synth-lined debut full-length from Elizabeth Harper's Class Actress. It's due next Tuesday via Carpark and below, you'll find a stream of the album in its entirety. Have a listen and comment away.
