The Mint Chicks, 'Crazy? Yes! Dumb? No!' (Milan)

Smirking, pogoing Kiwis ponder life's rich, unruly tapestry.

Now settled in Portland, Oregon, this New Zealand–bred trio reinvigorate timeworn rock customs on their ardently cheeky second album (the first was Fuck the Golden Youth, FYI). Brothers Kody and Ruban Nielson gleefully unleash a whirlwind of punk, metal, electronica, and power pop on witty rave-ups like "She's Back on Crack" and "You're Just as Confused as I Am," suggesting a ruder Supergrass. Not everything clicks -- notably the ambient, six-minute instrumental -- but the frantic "Walking Off a Cliff Again" makes up for the duds all by itself.
