WATCH: Soul Star Raphael Saadiq
Cool retro-soul records -- namely from fair-haired dudes in what SPIN's Charles Aaron dubbed the "White Soulboy Invasion" earlier this year -- litter the record release calendars of late 2009 and early 2010.
But while these newcomers deserve some praise, let's not sleep on one man who's been refreshing classic R&B for a long, long time: Raphael Saadiq.
In his brand new video for "Staying in Love," off The Way I See It (one of last year's pleasant surprises), Saadiq pairs cleverly wrought graphics -- think iPod ad meets Frank Miller's semi-animated film Sin City -- with the song's timeless, Motown/Funk Brothers-style guitar hook. Watch below -- it's a totally addictive track!
WATCH: Raphael Saadiq, "Staying in Love"
Saadiq -- whose set at this summer's Bonnaroo festival definitely caught our attention -- kicks off a nine-date tour with Janelle Monae and Anjulie on Nov. 16 in Seattle. Here's the full itinerary:
11/16, Seattle (Showbox SoDo)
11/18, Oakland (Fox Theatre)
11/20, Los Angeles (Henry Fonda Theatre)
11/24, Dallas (House of Blues)
11/25, Houston (House of Blues)
12/4, New York (Venue TBC)
12/6, Baltimore (Ramshead Live)
12/7, Washington, D.C. (9:30 Club)
12/9, Boston (House of Blues)

Really LOVE this video. The animation is out of sight. Thought I'm sure Mr. Saadiq has heard this a million times or more, he really favors Mr. David Ruffin in this video. Keep it coming.
Real talk in a real video GO RAPHAEL!
Falling is the easy part. Stayin is work. Been in it (love) for 20+ years. I wouldn't have it any other way. We are great together and we have raised 3 wonderful children. U get more out than u put in. Oh, I love the song, video and album. See u in Oakland. 6 more days!!!!!!!!!!
This is so cute!! I've got to catch one of these shows..Cheap plane fare, hotel and my Christmas present to me!! See yall soon Raphael!!
this is not Fair. I can't believe Orlando show is cancelled. That was suppose to be by early birthday present and the tickets were already purchased. What the fuck did I do to deserve this? All I wanted to do was see Raphael perform in person and this was probably going to be my only chance to see him now I probably won't ever get that chance And DON'T want to wait another year or 3 years just to see him, it will be to late then and he will be older. I am extremley upset and pissed the fuck off,( Not at raphael, but at the situation) That ruined my whole year.
Its Tricky Raphael , lookin forward to you returning to Detroit, whenever I will be there.....Love Ya!!!
Got something to say?
