It's been three long years since shimmery guitar-pop act Surfer Blood made waves at CMJ and then with their debut disc Astro Coast, but the Florida band finally returns this summer with a new Timbaland-approved album, Pythons. A few years ago, Surfer Blood opened for Pixies while that band toured Doolittle for the umpteeth time, and frontman JP Pitts was so inspired by Frank Black's band that they hired Doolittle producer Gil Norton to work on Pythons, which was recorded using amps borrowed from Pixies' Joey Santiago. So that influence is all over Pythons' first single of "Weird Shapes," a blast of surf rock that's similar to "Wave of Mutilation" and "Velouria," but with a Weezerific hook thrown in.

"'Weird Shapes' is a left of center pop song about someone who is about to go through a manic episode," Pitts says of the single. "It's one of the most dynamic songs we've ever written." To prepare for the arrival of Pythons, Surfer Blood is playing six fan-club shows throughout California starting February 24.
