REVIEW: Smashing Pumpkins Release New Song

News

The Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan
The Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan

Billy Corgan has released the second song from the Smashing Pumpkins' new 44-track project, Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, and like its predecessor, "Widow Wake My Mind" is a very pleasant surprise. Read: It's doesn't suck… at all.

Hear the track below.

Ol' Billy has ditched the dark, punishing sound of the Pumpkins' 2007 "reunion" album, Zeitgeist, opting for a more straight-forward rock sound reminiscent of his short-lived side-project Zwan.

"Widow Wake My Mind" opens with a funky, jangly electric guitar riff and soon drops into a dreamy sequence of floating bass and keys. "I'm looking for a love that shines / To be mine / Yes, all mine / A love that's mine," he sings in that nasal snarl over a climbing melody.

It's a well-crafted pop-rock song with spare piano interludes, never-overbearing drums (Jimmy Chamberlin's 19-year-old replacement is working out nicely), and a big, song-capping vocal with polished guitar solos.

So far, Mr. Corgan has a record of 2-0. Let's hope he keeps the winning streak up -- 42 more songs to go!

I'm so dissappointed. Such flat and heartless music from Corgan.
What happened to him...? He used to have something to say, or at least a real place he was coming from. I don't feel anything from this. Maybe it's lacking the imput of some of the original members, or maybe he's just...become complacent. :/

I just watched corgan singing on Leno - I died inside at how crap he has become. He was once one of my i guess you could say "idols" in the 90's.

He is now a joke. I have no idea what he is on. I mean, how do you go from songs like cherub rock, today, tonight tonight, perfect etc etc to "widow wake my mind"

"widow wake me up!" is more like it, cause this is a fuc...in nightmare!!!!

Absolute garbage. Just like 99.9% of their crap.

It's ok for a minute and then it becomes very irritating. Notice how piss poor the drumming is.. And I mean PISS POOR, The drum machine on Adore did a better job! from a drummers perspective it is not good, get him some lessons or something then you won't have to turn the volume down on them so much.

Beautiful song... these last two songs are the best songs I've heard from Billy since Adore.

That is total bollocks and you know it, who has paid you to to say this???

To me this song allmost had the potential to go somewhere but unfortunately it went the wrong way. I've heard nothing from this new drummer either that makes me think he is even a good drummer. I'm a guitarist and sometimes I find myself listening to some pumpkins/zwan songs just for jimmys drumming because it is that stand out, his drumming on zwan songs 'Lyric and Settle Down' are top notch.

I would love to hear something like 'My Life And Times' in the same kind of format as Pearl Jams 'Better Man'.

It's not great, I liked SFAS, The dual guitar sound is a winner.

I remember last year when that Glow **** came out, I watched the embarrasment on jimmys face in the video, I'm not surprised he left after that, He must have allmost died inside, And I couldn't believe what I was seeing when billy was standing there going.. 'c'mon c'mon c'mon, can you feel it??? c'mon c'mon c#mon can you feel it??'. It's allmost like people around him set him up to take the piss out of him or something, there's no way he could have been serious.

Just because he's giving it away for free does NOT make the song good. I agree with the majority of feedback that is out there, which is that this is not a very good song. That statement is put in the context of both Billy's work, as well as ANYONE elses.

And I have indeed heard a lot of great music from unknown artists who give their music away for free; again, much better than this garbage of a song.

Another comment is that anyone who feels Billy doesn't understand the media is a moron. It's a fact that there is a street team assigned to promoting this song. Get over it, any succesful musician knows how this works. It's a reason they are succesful.

I think the song is mediocore at best. It's gotten a little bit better as I have listened to it, but it just isn't that great of a song in my opinion. Just because a peace of **** is free doesn't make it good.

I am very appreciative of what Billy is doing, and can't wait for his other music, but I'm not going to fool myself into thinking all of the songs are going to be gems. I think Song for a Son is brilliant personally. Widow is just crap. That is my opinion, so deal with it and get off of your ****ing high horse you ass kissing ****s.

I absolutely love it. You lot are just a bunch of miserable barstewards - I'd like to see you write music that's better. Get over the fact that Billy isn't going to write the same music as he did in the 90's. Idiots. I think it's amazing that he's giving it away for free too. Don't be so ungrateful.

God damnit **** Pumpkins fans are the worst. Billy Corgan is not a demon. He's not "manipulating the media to give him positive reviews". As he said himself at one point, SP is *not* a corporation, he's *not* trying to take over the world, and especially not now, so whoever is trying to accuse BC of a cashgrab/attention whoring/whatever, just shut up. There's a fine line between realism and trite cynicism, and you just crossed it. He just wants to write happy songs instead of the stereotypical doom-and-gloom, and it's not like all of Teargarden is going to be Zwan (which I like anyway).

A Song for a Son is excellent. Widow Wake My Mind is not my favorite and I don't love it as much as I love SFAS but it's still good. There's a reason why no one except some retard from pitchfork has insulted Teargarden so far - because it's *good* and it's on par with old Pumpkins in every way.

The drum sound is awful. Awful on this song and awful on the last. There is no bounce or pop to it. And this song (or the last) isn't even close to Corgan's 90's output.

Love it! i'm no musical reviewer but i find it to be happy, and peppy and not at all what I expected. Thansk Billy! :D

complete and utter ****.

and not comparing it to other albums, other eras either. if anyone else - any other "band" released this - i would feel the same way. there's no soul to it. there's nothing innovative about it. this is the kind of trite you get when you surround yourself with kissassers who tell him day in and day out how great he is because they need him or at least need to name drop him every chance they can get.

perhaps this is the result of hanging out with the likes of tila tequila or jessica simpson or paris hilton. no wonder jimmy bailed out just as soon as he can. who would want to attach their name to something like this other than some 19 year old drummer no one has ever heard of before?

instead of searching out GOD or promoting GOD billy should be asking GOD why hast thou forsaken me? my music is **** now GOD! can you help a brother out?

Completely agree. I was psyched for this album, but I knew there was no way it was going to be 44 stellar tracks. SFAS was great, but Widow Wake My Mind was the complete opposite. Complete and utter s***. I hate this pop rock feel that BC has going on, much rather him go back to alt rock/grunge/90's vibe. A lot of people are knocking on Zeitgeist, but to be honest, I rather have Zeitgeist than an album full of Widow Wake My Mind songs.

First impressions, are i really dont like it. Its sorta boring musically. And predictable. One popcorn.

Did the reviewer listen to the same song I listened to? Widow wake my mind, right?

This song is crap. I expected some of the 44 songs to be crap, so that's ok. But this song sucks. It's a feable attempt at best with horrendous execution. There are so many layers that could have been added, but weren't. And the layers that are here are pretty weak.

It has it's moments, but overall this sucks donkey balls. I seriously cannot even finish listening to it more than once. Maybe in 20+ years when BC is done writing music, and I'm starved for Pumpkins, I will come back to this and find enjoyment in it. But I said the same thing about some of the material on Adore and my opinion is fundamentally unchanged there (btw, I do love the Adore album overall).

Anyway, I know how the Corgan media machine works, I know how to manipulate the media as well, and onboarding people to blog positive comments (yes, I know this is going on) will not change the fact this song sucks.

What the hell happened to epic music? Ya know, the statement you made BC when you released SFAS?

This repetitive, lyrically lame, overly simplistic, amateurish arrangement, with transitions worthy of a 16 year old just-learning-to-play-guitar is pathetic when put in the context of a great musician such as Billy.

I'm still a fan, and always will be....but I'm entitled to my opinion, and everyone that I know (fan and not) who has listened to this song has said the same thing.

This.....is.......terribad (a whole new level of ****ty song writing)

SERIOUSLY, It's a catchy and "oh. . oh . . oh," happy song and I'm so happy for BC and his Love that he can call his own, without shame. I have to admit, the song is not recorded how I expect a SP Song in tearms of quality. .but heck he's giving it away for free! I think I hear Feedback or something in there too! It did take a while for me to get where the song was going. The repetition of "Widow Wake my mind" at the beginning was hard at first but now I get it.
I know he will keep writing and expanding like he always has and does> I'm a fan of his art, and the music he produces.

It's not like anything I've heard in a long time.

BC or B Square

I like this. It's much more poppy than Song for a Son and in some ways thats kindof nice. I'd like to thank Billy for putting his music out free for anyone to do what they please with. Its a refreshing and exciting change to the industry. It's a nice addition and I'm looking forward to a lot more to come.

decent song for billy. I like the idea, i just think the lyrics could have been improved. Like Mo said, its nothing compared to anything pre-machina, after that still isnt much but its not bad. I liked song for a son alot better. Still this song is better than 90% of the crap out nowadays.

The keyboards and guitars on A Song for A Son sure make it sounds like Billy's been listening to a lot of '70s prog. I'm into it.

That is surprising and demands repeat listens.

I really dig this tune! It has a great 1970's mojo to it, and I love how it's simple, yet captivating. There is actually quite a lot of music occurring during the main chorus section. The buildup from 1:50 into the piano interlude is so Beatlesque, but in such a great way!

His vocals are top notch on this too, and it doesn't sound like he's afraid to embrace his uniqueness like he perhaps was with Zeitgeist (which I also liked).

I'm really looking forward to the next 42, and it's good to see a positive review from Spinner, especially since this track is so unique amongst SP's catalog.

My brother is a huge Pumpkinhead too, but he isn't in to the dark sound. I played him this and he was so ecstatic about it, he even said it's his favorite song from Billy!

Meh, nothing special, especially not if you compare it to Corgan's earlier work. Even Zwan's album tracks have more substance.
Oh well, 42 songs to go... that's a lot of chances (and hope).
