Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda Talks New Album
SPIN Interview
With the recent release of the fan club-only rarities compilation LPU9: Demos and a Grammy nomination for best Hard Rock Performance for "What I've Done," from their live album, Road to Revolution: Live at Milton Keynes, the decade is drawing to a close nicely for Linkin Park.
Which is to say the '00s are ending as positively as they began for the California sextet, whose 2000 debut, Hybrid Theory, ranked as the seventh-best selling album of the decade. "It's been an absolutely unbelievable ten years," says Mike Shinoda, the band's resident rapper and sonic mastermind. "But I'm even more excited to find out what the future has to offer."
The near-future will see the release of an as-yet-untitled new Linkin Park album and, hopefully, some other guerilla-style goodies. Speaking on the phone from his home in L.A., Shinoda filled us in on the band's recent projects, what to expect from the new album, and his own holiday plans.
Did going back and listening to your demos for the LPU9 album reveal anything to you about the way the band works?
So we've got all this stuff on hard drives that we occasionally reference for ideas, but as time went on we realized that we like making new sounds more than listening to our old ones. So we decided that if we weren't going to mine this older material, we should put it out.
Excellent. Now what about my original question? Anything to that?
[Laughs] Yeah! Sorry I went off on a bit of a tangent there. You definitely pick stuff up when you go back and listen to older material. There were situations, for example, when I listened to the demos and realized that I loved playing with my MPC sampler -- it had a sound that I liked a lot that the samplers I was using on the new record didn't have. So I ended up using that again.
Tell us about the new album.
Well, Rick Rubin is producing it. I'd say we're about halfway done. I'm really happy with what we have so far. We're having a ton of fun in the studio. We really want to do something special and unique for the next record -- we want to redefine the band. I feel like on Hybrid Theory we wanted to introduce ourselves to the world with a certain sound. Then on [2003's] Meteora we were trying to show that we weren't a fluke and we could do the sound that made us successful a second time. By the time we got to [2007's] Minutes to Midnight, we wanted to break down that sound and go outside its confines. Now that we've done that, we feel like we can do anything.
Can you describe any of the songs?
That would be really hard for me to do. I have a tough time doing that. But I can say that it sounds brand new. The thing is, there are so many different ways to make music these days with virtual instruments, software applications, physical instruments, and computer programs. Then when you get in the position of being able to use almost any of it -- that's what we did on Minutes to Midnight . We wanted to play with as many instruments and sounds as we could. But on the new record, now that we have a sense of everything that's available to us, we can reel it in a bit and focus on just the things that we like, which so far is turning out to mean music that is more beat-driven and has a keyboard and drum machine kind of feel.
Have you picked a name for it yet?
Way too early for that.
Did Chester's going off and working with [solo project] Dead By Sunrise have any residual affect on how he's now contributing to Linkin Park?
That's a good question. I related to where Chester was at when he was making the Dead By Sunrise record. I went through the same thing with [Shinoda's side-project] Fort Minor. He had songs that he had to get out of his system; songs that the rest of the guys in Linkin Park couldn't necessarily get behind. Not because they wouldn't like them, but because they aren't right for a Linkin Park record. I think for both of us, working outside the band made us feel like we could focus better when we eventually came back.
Aside from the album, what do you guys have planned for the future?
We really wanted to start a phase in our career where we could release music more often rather than have to wait to put out a new album every four years. The demo album is sort of representative of that. But we also wrote "New Divide" for the Transformers movie. Chester put out his Dead By Sunrise record. We're working on the new album, so things are already moving along nicely. We're really trying hard to give fans the opportunity to hear new material from us more often. It's just a matter of finding the right outlets. Hopefully, those outlets aren't always in the form of albums.
What's going on with you for the holidays? Any big plans?
Usually I spend my holidays with my family. My parents still treat Christmas like I'm thirteen years old. It's super traditional. I write out a Christmas list beforehand, we eat turkey and drink hot cider. It's pretty funny.
What'd you put on your Christmas list?
That part's pretty tough! I can't ask my parents to buy me a mixing board or a Neve console. So I end up asking for a nice sweater. That's more their speed.

These guys r the best i think that a real fan will stick with them no matter what they try. Minutes to Midnight,Hybrid Theory and Meteora were really good albums. Although they all sound diffrent they are 1 and only because they try new things and i have much respect for that. People sit here saying they went down hill but i dont see them making any awesome albums and still stick ti being the people we love. I love Linkin Park and they can be assured that i will support them no matter what new project comes out.
P.S. IF THEY COME TO DENVER I'LL SEE YOU ALL THERE!!

you are a moron to say what you say. that just because a band adapts it's style that means they've sold out or are deceitful. that just becuse all there ablums don't sound exactly the same that means they've gone down hill. give me a break it's a mix of all the music that makes them amazing if you're such a huge fan then i would hope you've seen them live...they still play all the old kick ass songs as well as the new ones and they are are amazing. just because every song is not a hard rappin screaming song does not mean they've gone down hill that just means they've changed style, experimented with something new. you obviously don't play an insturment or in a band or you would realize sometimes the same old thing over and over can get rather boring.

01.02.10 7:55 PM) posts!!!I couldn't have said it better!! I totally agree with everything that you have said in your posts! Thank you for clarifing what music is all about to people who have NO clue! LP 4 Life no matter what the sound. People need to learn to appreciate change if they like a band as much as they say they do. If you can't adapt to change then don't listen to it; it's that simple.

Unlike those Pseudofans out there, Linkin Park keeps with the times, they try to adapt to keep things fresh, how you think bands like U2 etc have continued on?? They adapted. yeah not everyone is going to like everything but at least you can appreciate their hard work on coming up with a song, even an album.
Im a true fan I liked M2M, and the others. I like how they changed, and if LP is going to be around for the next 10,20 30 years we have to learn to adapt with them because if bands keep playing the same old theme things fail.

Shame these guys went downhill. I guess 4 years of change will do that to a band. Original fans know that the new music sounds nothing like the old. And to change the sound is almost deceitful. To go outside the confines of a specific style that's loved by many is to just give up what makes the music as special as it was to those people.

To the guy that said your are sick of hearing MTV crap, hip-hop and... "money making Beatles"? Wow... Linkin Park is an amazing band and I eagerly await their new album (I have listened to nearly every song they have put out and love them) but The Beatles are the main reason that any of the good (and even bad) bands today have the opportunities that they do. To say that The Beatles are crappy and not "real" is to completely disregard some of the origins and top quality rock music ever made.
Keep recording LP... as I said I am VERY eagerly awaiting the new album, and I could care less if it sounds like HT, Meteora, MtM, or even something completely different.

For anyone that is a "real" Linkin Park fan - you know who you are....we will LOVE anything they put out no doubt about that!! For anyone that has not taken the time out to read Chester's interviews about his side project DBS and listened to the lyrics of DBS you are so missing out! It is incredible! Take the time to do it if your interested and I tell you that you will not be disappointed.

I'm glad to hear good news. Most of all I'm glad to hear that they will put out music more frequently that they did before(I like the side-projects and the collaborations but I want them to give more space to their studio albums).Nothing to say about how's it going to sound because it's going to be awesome 4 sure whethere is light or hard stuff 'cause I like the variety of the type of songs of the LP.LP keep it up and make us proud again of your work! Finally there's something iteresting again after all that MTV crap that's been going around these years, I'm tired of hearing of lame and untalented bands like muse and coldplay,money-making beatles and fake cracked up hip-hop artists with their ****ty and hyper-ripetitive political and sexual references. Don't give a **** about boobs and masks and blah blah blah... I want music to be really good and REAL!

the problem is the band they dont have "anger" like they have before (like hybrid theory, animation, ep releasses) because they are so rich righitnow and each one of them have a girlfriend or wife ,so how can they do a painfull or raw songs if they didnt live an awful life (minutes to midnight ) is aproof about what im talking about
frankly.....(carousel,system,... andone, & qwerty these songs are my favorites...i dont wanna songs like numb, braking the habit, what i,ve done bla bla bla....ihope the band back to their roots (imean before hybrid theory album )

Half way there!!! Haha that's great news..
Anyway, when Mike talks about the LP sound it always seems just about right. Just like LP itself. The words 'mean', 'beat driven' and 'key-board and drum machine feel' make my ears tickle already ( lol )!!!
The only thing I hope for is an album that's equally dope as the last three were ( and are )!
