Hear Kylesa Channel Smashing Pumpkins on Charred Dreamdoom Swirl ‘Quicksand’

Double-drummin’ doomsday device Kylesa is finally dropping the follow-up to 2010’s critically acclaimed Spiral Shadow. As we reported, sixth album Ultraviolet is due on May 28 via Season of Mist, and they’ve already dropped the first taste, the chugging “Unspoken” back in February. But while that was a scorched taste of Kylesa Klassic, second bite “Quicksand” is more in line with Ultraviolet’s wild diversions into hookier and more atmospheric fare. “Quicksand” is a quick 2:35 of ghostly dreamdoom that joins the melodies of ’90s shoegaze with the churn of modern sludge and a riff straight from the Billy Corgan playbook — a muscular swirl that should please anyone who thought m b v didn’t have enough shouting.
