Kanye West's Bonnaroo Debacle

After stomaching numerous set-time changes and a painful early morning wait, fans weigh in on the hip-hop maven's show, which finally started two hours late -- at 4:45 A.M.!

Since its initial announcement, Kanye West's Bonnaroo headlining set has been troublesome to fans. West's slot, originally set for the Which Stage earlier in the day, was moved to the main What Stage at 2:45 A.M., reportedly to bolster his Glow in the Dark light show. But early this morning, as tens of thousands of fans amassed in preparation for the much-anticipated gig, Kanye was nowhere to be found, and his most devout waited, and waited, and waited…

Finally, after heckles and -- as one concertgoer states -- plenty of refuse being thrown onstage, West finally emerged more than two-hours late -- just before the sun began to rise. In the aftermath, chatter of West's show and -- more notably -- his disrespect for his fans, has spread like wildfire. And while some affirm the performance was worth the wait, most Bonnaroovians are upset, and for good reason.

"Many people paid money to go to this Bonnaroo festival just to see you, you've got to respect that!" said Evan, a Bonnaroo concertgoer addressing West. "It was the biggest disappointment of the entire Bonnaroo concert."

What happened? Let the fans explain:

I would Never go see Kayne West At Bonnaroo. I was there I went to sleep because I really do not care for Kayne West! He has a Big head and thinks that he is almighty because he has won a few Grammy awards. Those Grammys suck anyway , its for people who wear hollister shirts and flip flops and Flop up their collared shirts. I am neither a Stinking Hippy or trendy indie rocker nor a frat pop nor an emo.. I enjoy good music and Kayne is not good I rather listen to Jay-Z at Glastenbury or some old school rap pharcyde, Tribe Called Quest. Even 50 cent. The Best band out there was My Morning Jacket by far then Pearl Jam... You couldnt even pay me 1 million ars to Listen to Kayne west. He ruined Bonnaroo 2008, i hope people boycott his shows. He doesnt know how to treat his fans. Phil Lesh wanted to play a hour later but No Kayne wasnt about to play while anyone else was playing cause he only cares for himself.. So Kayne I hope those money stacks are good because you be doing commercials like MC Hammer in 10 years... You will Never have the longevity as a Phil Lesh, Widespread Panic, Robert Plant, Pearl Jam or Metallica. You are a fading star that will be laughed at Like Vanilla Ice and Millie Vanille.. Bottom Line you suck!! Trends Change and you will be counting your pennies soon!!

OK....first of all, let's not hate on Pearl Jam or make them an excuse in any way for Kanye's mess. As for the comment about "Eddie stumblin over his words", sounds like you're a bit jealous, throwing in a ridiculous insult to make your argument "seem" better.
The fact of the matter is, Kanye West was intolerably late for his performance, all 4/5 times that it was rescheduled! He walks out on stage with an attitude that was bigger than him & offers no explanations, no apologies, he addresses the crowd, his fans, in no way whatsoever!
I had waited ALL day in line to be in the pit to see Pearl Jam, 9 1/2 hours to be exact. When Eddie Vedder walked out, he was more than gratifying.
I'm going to Lollapalooza & I hope that Kanye puts on a better show in Chicago, and leaves "Jane" & her space ship at the house!
By the way, I'm a HUGE Pearl Jam fan!!! :)

Pearl Jam could not of setup Kanye more perfectly for a fantastic performance (I'm not even really a Pearl Jam fan and that was one of the better sets I've ever seen, not to mention a very solid showing by Jack Johnson before Pearl Jam) and somehow Kanye managed to screw it all up. He should of just gone on stage and done ANYTHING and the crowd would of eaten it up. How could you possibly expect to keep a crowd waiting for 2 hours, especially considering the time, and think you can get away with it? What a self-absorbed, egomaniac. Craziest part of the whole thing is the previous night, Chris Rock talked about how Kanye has the BIGGEST ego on earth. Its too bad Kanye couldnt have selved his ego for one night cause the night had the making to be legendary...

Kanye West is the biggest Pompous I know. He was a complete idiot and full of himself to think he could scream in a mic while doing the same three poses. Who ever thought he could entertain without dancers or lasers? He was an embarrasement to Bonnaroo as a whole. It's meaning and the art it brings. He was last on everyone's list. He was so worried about his MTV DVD being complete by playing for over 70,000 people he forgot to bring his talent. He was absolutely talentless. Zero creativity. He got up, did his "job" and went back to his dressing room and cried. I am selling "leave Kanye alone" t-shirts and asking Chris Crocker to make a video for him on youtube.com. After the show campers and vendors all made "Kanye Sucks" banners and spray painted the ground to announce their disbelief they were kind enough to give this guy a shot to bring it. To get on stage and be real. To try something knew. To really go for it. I was even talking about him possibly stopping and having a table and breakfast out on the stage to bring a little light to the delayed show. Or do some rapping without all the recorded beats that sounded as if they were coming from my stock speakers. There was no barrier pushed. Did he see any other sets at Bonnaroo and get spooked because everyone there is so talented he realized everyone was going to realize it. This guy doesn't have a musical bone in his body. He is man made. Not only did he talk to a weird space lady about crashing his rediculously expensive "set" but he told her 4 songs in that he, "just needed one thing." The space lady said she could help him with that. I can't even say what "it" is because of the ual conotation. It was his plea to get attention. Very sad to see someone stoop to the ual conotation level. It's the easiest and worst way to try and get attention. People left screaming obsenities and banning the entire festival if changes aren't made. Pearl Jam and Metalica should not have been there either. Aweful decision making. Why didn't he come talk to the crowd? Disrespectful. Where are his manners? Did he forget he was in the South? I would have rathered him come apologize and tell us 5am. We could have gone and seen the other music that we paid to see instead of sitting starring at a finished stage for 2 hours. The stage bit is all false and a lie. He was being a little brat that didn't want to play while other bands were playing. Which is rediculous to expect 70,000 people will all want to watch him. Wow, check yourself Kanye. You may have left a stain.

I too was at Bonnaroo and when thinking about staying up till 2:45 after a full day of drinking in the blistering hot sun, we opted out for the Kanye show,, for ONE reason. I had made the mistake of purchasing tickets to see him on his own once, and he showed up 2 F-ing hours late for that show as well, and made no apologies.. total diva.. and that was the end of my Kanye love.
The entire Bonnaroo community was up in arms the next day about staying up late for a shitty show, and I was ever so thankful for not giving him a 2nd chance.
I only wish that people knew that is how he rolls, not just a one time thing
right from the horse's mouth
"you should be honored by my LATENESS, that I would even show up for this fake shit"

Screw Kanye and his BS

There was plenty of time between 1 am and 2:45 to get the stage set up. Pearl Jam didn't get to finish their set -- we know this because the camera showed Ed's set list on the big screen -- and shouldn't THE headlining band get to play late if they and their fans want? That's the reason the headliners are the last show on the main stage. If only we'd heard Yellow Ledbetter and Indifference... but Kanye sucks! Bonnaroo should have never given in to Kanye's demands to move his performance location or time.

I find it UNBELIEVABLE ANYONE could like the crap that man performed. It was a bunch of over-choreographed nonsense. I was pumped that Kanye was performing and that excitement was doubled when I heard it would be late night. Not only did he not apologize for being late, he never said one thing that wasn't a stupid line written for some stupid show that would not have been considered high tech in the 1980's . I would live a happy life never seeing or hearing from him again. Worst part of an otherwise perfect Roo.

This was my third B-roo and I was so excited when kanye was moved so as not to conflict with Jack Johnson.  I had heard through friends that it was an amazing concert.  I agree that it is shitty that Kanye didn't address the issue and he should have.  But doing so would mean he would probably have to slam Bonnaroo organizers or Pearl Jam.  Only ONE media outlet I have found actually confirms that one BIG reason Kanye was late was because Pearl Jam did not end their set at the scheduled time but rather went over time.  The take down of PJ's set and building the elaborate Kanye set is what caused the delay.  I am more upset that someone didn't come on stage and tell us that was the reason and let people make a decision.  But they sat there and allowed the crowd to boo and rage on Kanye.  Pearl Jam had a great set and it's a catch 22 - we are thrilled they gave us an extra hour as a treat, but it was the expense of Kanye.  I actually feel bad for him.  What was he going to say...?   Bonnaroo should have handled the situation better.   They were just embarrassed b/c they delayed it three times already and didn't want to do it again.  And god forbid they blame it on Eddie.  Kanye is more expendable to their cause.  I actually feel bad for the poor guy.  He could have apologized but it would have drummed up more boos and hisses from the crowd.  And that is one of the BIGGEST reasons he went on late.  Give him a break.

If he released a direct media statement, not via any spokesperson or other source, with a LEGITIMATE and BELIEVABLE reason for his lateness and disregard for the audience, I might be willing to "give him a break."  I've given him breaks lots of times.  His music has usually been good enough, in my opinion, to forgive his larger-than-life ego, inappropriate racial statements, and holier-than-thou personality.  That is WHO KANYE IS because that is what he shows the public, and most importantly his fans.  He might need damage control and a re-evaluation of how he treats the people who make his life the "GOOD LIFE," his supporters and fans.  I'm willing to give him another shot, but he really blew it.  CASE CLOSED.Â
