If Garbage confidently reemerged last year as alt-rock elder statespeople, they did it with all of the wisdom and none of the curmudgeonliness. As the band best known for late-'90s hits like "Only Happy When It Rains," "Stupid Girl," and "I Think I'm Paranoid" returned to the Late Show With David Letterman stage last night, their host pointed out they'd actually made their network TV debut with him in 1996. An assured, energetic performance of "Battle in Me," from last year's Not Your Kind of People, showed these veterans are still spoiling for a fight. "Let's make out / I won't tell your girlfriend," Shirley Manson purred with a curl of her lip. Letterman said, "You call that garbage?!" Beautiful, same as it ever was.
