For Killers frontman Brandon Flowers, the process of recording Flamingo, his first solo album, was a "lonely" one -- and actually began as the fourth Killers full-length.

"This started out [as a Killers record]," Flowers told BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe. "It just became something else when I realized I wasn't ready to take a very long break and a couple of the guys were."

And while Killers drummer Ronnie Vannucci did play drums on the record, the rest of the band wasn't involved. "It was weird," Flowers said. "Without union and the Killers and that way of doing things and friendship. I had fun making the record but that brotherhood didn't exist. At times it was a little bit lonely."

Flowers did have some company, though, in the studio: Daniel Lanois (best known for his work with U2 and Bob Dylan), Brendan O'Brien (credits include Pearl Jam), and Stuart Price (Madonna's musical director and remixer of "Mr. Brightside" under his Jacques Lu Cont moniker) produced the album, and Rilo Kiley leading lady Jenny Lewis made a vocal cameo.

The Killers aren't going anywhere, though, Flowers said, telling Lowe that they're already discussing a date to reunite in the studio to work on a new album. A tumultuous string of events in early 2010 -- a canceled Australian tour and the death of Flowers' mother among them -- led to rumors of a prolonged hiatus or even a breakup, which the band refuted, with guitarist Dave Keuning asserting the band's desire for some much-needed time off.

Meanwhile, "Crossfire," the lead single from Flowers' Flamingo, is beginning to emerge at radio. Take a listen here:
