Arum Rae started writing songs while attending Boston’s Berklee College of Music, back when she carefully studied the stylings of Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald. In the time since, the Austin native (whose full name is Arum Rae Valkonen) has settled in Brooklyn, adopted and abandoned the moniker of White Dress, and joined forces with producer Sanford Livingston. Their partnership has resulted in the Warranted Queen EP, Arum Rae’s debut effort. The self-released set doesn’t officially arrive until April 22, but Arum Rae has shared an advance track from the EP. For a minimal blend of heavy, nocturnal beats and Auto-Tuned soul singing, stream “2001” below.
