The description “James Blake with strings instead of electronics” is both reductive and not entirely accurate, but as a thumbnail description of Lo-Fang — brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Matthew Hemerlein — you could do worse. Having made his mark with the slow and sultry “88,” “Look Away,” the opening track from his debut LP, finds him in more upbeat mode, with a gently driving beat and a slow, string-embellished breakdown in the middle. The video above was directed by Grant Singer (the Soft Moon, Sky Ferreira, DIIV). The album, called Blue Film, is set to arrive early next year via 4AD, and features Hemerlein playing all instruments.
