Terrific Twitter Trio of the Week
The Strokes' Julian Casablancas, Rye Rye, and Man Man make our list.
Lots of people tweet — but all that Twitters is not gold.
That’s why you’ll want to check out SPIN.com every Friday to see whose tweets we’re reading this week — then update your TweetDeck! (Obligatory Self-Promotion: …while you’re at it, be sure to follow @SPINmagazine!)
This week’s winners:
- The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas
Why You Should Follow: The Strokes’ charismatic frontman finds inspiration in cooking shows and Beethoven, deals with pretentious assholes (“The only place you’ll find more condescension and unhappiness than in a guitar store is in a video game store”), and travels all over the world. Whether he’s tweeting about trying an avocado milkshake (“way better than it sounds”), listening to rare Bob Marley and the Wailers tracks, or “feeling at odds” with the Swedish countryside, his tweets offer a glimpse into the sometimes-not-so-exciting (but still fascinating) life of a rock star.
Best Tweet of the Week: “Just saw Sid Vicious on a cell phone walking down Hollywood Blvd.”
- Rye Rye
Why You Should Follow: M.I.A.’s hip-hop prodigy is on top of the world right now. Her first album is slated to drop this summer, she hangs out with Will Smith and Pharrell Williams (just check out her Twitter background!), and every day brings a new photo shoot or recording session. She’s a bona fide Twitter addict, so expect plenty of name-dropping (“Emailing Mos Def! Thats my homie=) aint talk to him in ages, glad to catch up!!”), re-tweets from fans, and words of wisdom (“Afternoon, Remember If You have some Stress in Your Life…Get Rid Of It, It Isnt Healthy!!! You’ll Never Live Peacefully #thatisall). Bonus points: She’s always listening to new music and sharing her finds with her followers! She also sometimes hosts Twitter chatrooms to get to know her fans.
Best Tweet of the Week: “Pharrell speaks Some Real Shit, Like The Way He Thinks! 1st Song Done On TO the Next! *Writing* I’ll Be Back”
- Man Man
Why You Should Follow: This Philadelphia-based band is known for its unique, practically indescribable sound — a mix of vaudeville punk and gypsy folk with a dash of bluesy soul. The band’s five members (Honus Honus, Sergei Sogay, Pow Pow, Critter Crat, and Chang Wang) are famous for their wild costumes and over-the-top performances. Currently on tour in the U.S., they post cryptic updates and Twitpics of aliens, sneezing Furbies, and pizza-spattered hotel key cards. They also post occasional news (concert announcements, ticket sales, etc.) and link pretty frequently to the photos and videos on their Facebook fan page. They aren’t the most prolific tweeters out there, but they will keep you entertained!
Best Tweet of the Week: “So strange Dick Cheney exists in the same Cosmos as exploding stars!”
