Man Who Shot Proof Convicted of Two Weapons Charges

The man authorities say shot and killed rapper Proof in defense of another man during a shootout in April has been convicted of two weapons charges Wednesday (Sept. 20). Mario Etheridge, whom police say shot the rapper at the CCC after-hours nightclub in Detroit after Proof fatally shot Etheridge’s cousin, Keith Bender, has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon and discharging a firearm inside a building. The first charge is punishable by up to five years in prison and the second could land him behind bars for four years. While the prosecutor said Etheridge acted lawfully in defense of his cousin by firing at Proof, she added Etheridge was charged for illegally firing a weapon inside since he shot twice at the ceiling in an attempt to stop Proof before he turned the gun on the rapper.

Etheridge will be sentenced Oct. 17.
