It’s the most wonderful time of the year – sleigh bells are jingling, chestnuts are roasting on an open fire, and Mariah Carey‘s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is playing in just about every storefront, office, and home in America.
Though it may seem an inescapable sensation, this month actually marks the first time Carey’s Christmas tune has broken into the top 10 songs of the Billboard Hot 100. Billboard reports that the track “jingled” from its prior peak position at No. 11 to a new high of No. 9 on the chart dated December 30. “All I Want for Christmas” is Carey’s 28th song in the Hot 100 top 10, tying her with Stevie Wonder for the fifth-most in the chart’s history, which dates back to August 4, 1958.
When asked by Billboard to comment on her newly minted top 10 track, Carey called the achievement “an amazing Christmas gift!”
“It truly warms my heart, and I am proud of this song that I wrote basically as a kid on my little Casio keyboard,” she added.
